Whoooohoooooo!!! It's my birthday, and to celebrate I've baked us a cake. Really it's more like a chocolate chip brownie drenched in caramel, but let's call it a cake so I can put some candles on it and make a wish. ;)
I've loved this recipe since I was a kid and my birthday isn't a birthday without a slice (or two or three) of this turtle cake. So just in case you like chocolate and caramel as much as I do, I thought I'd share the recipe with you today.
HERE'S THE HOW TO:
Stuff you'll need:
1 box German chocolate cake mix
12 oz can evaporated milk
1/2 cup margarine
1 bag of caramels
1 cup of pecans (Optional - I do without.)
1 cup chocolate chips
Mix cake mix with 1/2 cup evaporated milk and melted margarine. Pour half of the mix in a 9x13 ungreased pan and bake 5-6 minutes at 350 degrees. Meanwhile, melt caramels with 1/2 cup evaporated milk. Dribble this over baked cake. Sprinkle with pecans and chocolate chips. Spoon the remaining batter over the top. Bake 18-20 minutes at 350 degrees.
(Note: It's best to refrigerate the cake in hot weather. Also, feel free to lick the batter from the bowl. There are no eggs in this recipe, so it is perfectly safe and encouraged to do so.)
That's it. All that is left to do is sing happy birthday and enjoy! Yum!
