I found this little project over on Pinterest and knew I had to give it a go. It is such a cute way to store matches (and light them too) and I do love putting my mason jars to work.
HERE'S THE HOW TO:
Stuff you'll need:
Mason Jar
Strike Anywhere Matches
Sandpaper
Scissors
Method:
1. Use the inner lid of the mason jar and trace its shape onto the sand paper.
2. Cut out the shape you drew.
3. Insert the sandpaper cut out into the lid and stack 'em up. (You can also glue the sandpaper into place on the lid if you like.)
4. Now, your matches will look pretty sitting where you need them, and all you need to do to get a little flame is strike them on the lid.

Note: I didn't have any strike anywhere matches on hand so I used regular matches as stand ins, because I wanted to go ahead and show you what the jar should look like when it's finished.
Regular matches won't light on the sandpaper, but I'm thinking about modifying the lid to insert the striking strip from a matchbox (like this). That way I can use the matches I already have on hand.

P.S. How cute is this little gift idea for wedding guests?
UPDATE: Emily over at Goodness Greeness mentioned on twitter how awesome this little jar would be on camping trips, and I have to agree. Such a great way to keep you matches dry against the elements. Thanks Emily!
So cute!! :)

Thanks!
DeleteThis is a really cute idea. I always lose my matches somehow so this will maybe come in handy.
ReplyDeleteThey'll be easier to find in a pretty mason jar. :)
DeleteThis looks soo cute Erica, such a clever gift idea:) I wish I could get my hands on Manson jars here a little bit easier but sadly I can only order some online so I haven't bothered.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if mason jars are just more of a thing here in the U.S.?? Rachael also mentioned in her comment below that she can't get them in the U.K. either. Hmmm...
DeleteYou could probably use any kind of jar and just glue the sandpaper on top. There's always a way to make things work... :)
super cute & awesome idea! I am going to share this on my log and link back to you! www.goodnessgreenness.com

what an awesome idea! we are constantly looking for lighters/matches when we want to light a candle in our house and can't ever find them! this is perfect and cute too!
ReplyDeleteThanks Brooklyn! Gosh, it's been too quite over at Veggie Table lately. I hope the move is going well. Say 'hi' to Salvie for me :)
DeleteAww that is such a cute idea! I would love to try this but I'm not really sure where to find Mason Jars in the UK! I love recycling jam jars as drinking glasses too, now there is something else I can use them for :).

It's funny, because Catherine above says she can't get them in Austrialia either. You could definately use any type of jar for this project, even jam jars. Just glue the sandpaper on top.
DeleteHeading over to see what you've been baking lately. I can smell it from here... YUM! :)
So so so cute!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteOh I teach all sorts of genres of dance but I trained in classical ballet!
Adorable!! I thought the black on the top was blackboard paint for a minute. oops :)

wow..so cool, so the match will light up against the sand paper????

Yep, the trick is to have strike anywhere matches, and they will light on the sandpaper. :)
DeleteOooh, that is really cool. What a wonderful idea for gift giving too or maybe add to a homemade gift basket with a camping theme.....hmmmm.....lots of fun possibilities.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a cute idea! My husband recently bought a mini blow torch to light candles, but I still like the idea of old fashioned matches!
ReplyDeleteOh, wow, a torch!!! You mean business when you light candles! ;)
DeleteWhat a great idea!

Very useful and lovely to look at too.
ReplyDeleteI also love putting my mason jars to use.
I really need to give this a try because the little scratch pads on the boxes of matches we have do a terrible job. This would save me a lot of heart ache, and broken matches. Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteHa ha! No need to cry over spilt milk... or broken matches. ;)
DeleteGreat idea! I'm going to make this!

I'm loving National Smile Week! :)
DeleteThis looks so cute! Dave is actually obsessed with collecting jars.
ReplyDeleteSad that with our big move coming up we will need to get rid of them.
(we are moving from London to Sydney and it doesn't make sens to pay shipping for empty jars)
Ah well we will start collecting from scratch.
P.S: You take great photos.
Boo on having to get rid of your jar collection. At least you'll have a lot of room to collect more jars after the big move.
DeleteCan't wait to hear about your move to Sydney... how exciting! :)
This is a amazing idea... I never knew you could use sandpaper!
ReplyDeletehow clever!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a clever DIY! It's funny how you can never find a lighter when the power goes out. :) You have so many great projects - can't wait to check them out!
ReplyDeleteI'm always loosing my lighters and matches (even if the power isn't out). My next project should be a device that helps me find them... lol!
DeleteThis looks so cute!! and talk about easy to make! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI love an easy DIY :)

this is so cute and different! such a shame that were I live is too much humid and all the matches would be ruin in a few weeks =/
ReplyDeletebut I like it! :)
I wonder if the mason jar could help keep the moisture from the matches?? If not, then I'm guessing you just stick with lighters, then...
DeleteThat's darling!! Since I'm a lighter kinda girl, I might need to A) Go old school and bring matches back, or B) Come up with a totally original lighter holder... hmmm...
ReplyDeleteA lighter holder... love it! I've got to see that one. :)
DeleteP.S. Looks like you had a great time ziplining!
